Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)

ARFID is an eating disorder that presents in the difficulty of meeting nutritional needs due to the avoidance of certain types of foods because of texture, taste, smell…or

Avoidance of food due to a negative experience to that food such as having choked, become sick from eating, or fear of becoming sick or vomiting from eating that food…or

An overall lack of interest in eating altogether.

While typically ARFID is not caused by the over-evaluation of shape or body size it is still imperative to treat ARFID under a weight inclusive/Health At Every Size lens.

Individuals struggling with ARFID may find it difficult to meet nutritional needs, avoid social engagements due to fear foods being present and not being able to eat around others, fear of being judged by their food choices, or fears around an aversive consequence such as choking or vomiting.
